The Medical Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who is thoroughly familiar with the physical and geometrical characteristics of the radiation equipment and radioactive sources. 

The Medical Dosimetrist must be able to apply theoretical knowledge in radiation physics principles, utilizing critical thinking skills to perform daily activities and solve clinical problems associated with the essential job functions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs dose calculations in patients' radiation therapy charts and verifies the accuracy of all calculations. Performs manual or computerized planning of external beam treatments. Coordinates treatment simulations and tumor localization, including Computed Tomography, for radiation therapy treatment planning. Supervises, performs, or assists in the planning and the fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices.

 

EDUCATION
Required: Graduate of hospital or college affiliated medical dosimetry school with clinical and classroom curriculum for duration of 1 year; - OR - Bachelor's degree in a physical or biological science; or registered radiation therapy technologist. Graduate of medical dosimetry school, no experience is required. With registered radiation therapy technologist or a Bachelor's degree in physical or biological science, 1 year of dosimetry experience is required.


EXPERIENCE

Required: Experience within the last six months as a Medical Dosimetrist in clinical dosimetry under the supervision of a medical dosimetrist or radiation physicist. Satellite Dosimetrists and coverage for Satellite treatment centers must be Advanced or Expert, according to the Medical Dosimetry Professional Development Model.


LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Required: Certification as a Medical Dosimetrist by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) within 4 years of becoming a Medical Dosimetrist. Proof of certification required in the form of official notification from the MDCB such as test results or a copy of the MDCB certificate.

OTHER Must have theoretical knowledge and expertise in the technical aspects of radiation therapy treatments and must be able to effectively and clearly communicate these aspects orally and in writing to the Radiation Oncologist and the Radiation Therapist.  Medical Dosimetry Certification Board: Statement on the Scopes and Standards of Medical Dosimetry Practice.
